Pulmonary Rehabilitation at Athol Hospital is a one-stop option, right in your back yard. One of the most comprehensive skilled programs in Central and Western Massachusetts, Athol Hospital’s program is led by a team of qualified respiratory therapists, on-site 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the program is staffed by Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certified registered nurses and is overseen by pulmonary physicians. Physician and Hospitalist coverage is also available 24/7. We employ a multi-disciplinary approach that includes physical and occupational therapies, nutrition counseling, social services and nurse case management.

Our care team’s number one goal is to improve condition self-management and help patients enjoy an active and independent lifestyle.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Enrollment in a non-managed Part A as your primary insurances and have days available
  • Three consecutive acute night stays in an acute care hospital within the last 30 days
  • Need for skilled care services on a daily basis provided by or under the direct supervision of skilled nursing or rehabilitation professionals
  • Need for nursing care seven (7) days a week and/or Physical/ Occupational Therapy five (5) or more days per week
  • Needs are related to the condition which was treated or arose during the qualifying acute care stay
  • For all intents and purposes, the skilled need is required on an inpatient basis

Oxygen and Ventilation Therapy

  • Evaluate, titrate/wean and make changes based on need
  • High and Low Flow supplemental oxygen provided using various delivery methods
  • Assisted ventilation equipment includes Bi-level and CPAP

Our comprehensive program also includes:

  • Incentive Spirometery
  • Clinical tracheotomy care management, including changes
  • Education provided on disease, medication, improving quality of life
  • Increased independence with ADLs
  • Nutritional Intervention
  • Psycho-social Support
  • Smoking Cessation support
  • PEP Therapy using various Acapella devices (Positive Expiratory Pressure)
