Dear Friends of Heywood Healthcare,
Reflecting on Our Recent and Future Accomplishments
During this joyous season, I’d like to take a moment to reflect on our recent successes and milestones, and look forward to the unlimited promise of the New Year.
Throughout 2018, Heywood Healthcare continued its commitment to improving healthcare access for the North Central and North Quabbin regions. Perhaps the most visible change is Athol Hospital’s new 52,000 square foot Emergency Department (ED) and Medical Office Building (MOB), part of our Fulfilling our Promise capital campaign.
Once completed, this new space will significantly upgrade our emergency facilities, doubling the number of treatment rooms for acute care and behavioral health, with enhanced privacy, a new easily accessible lobby, dedicated ambulance entrance and a new imaging center. The upper floors of the MOB will house primary care and specialty physicians, in addition to one of the area’s most respected behavioral health providers, Clinical and Support Options. While work on this project continues through the winter months, we look forward to the official opening of the new space in late spring 2019. We also continue our work to develop the Quabbin Retreat and look forward to future plans for the Heywood Surgical Pavilion, our other two major projects.
While we have been investing in some very visible projects, we have also diligently working behind the scenes to continue to provide our communities with the highest quality care close to home. We see the fruits of our every day labor when those who grade us on quality and safety, like The Leapfrog Group, named Heywood one of only 26 ‘A’ rated Hospitals in Massachusetts once again for fall 2018.
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), which also grades hospitals on quality and safety, noted that both Athol and Heywood Hospitals have response times to patients experiencing chest pain markedly below the state and national averages. We all know that in healthcare, minutes matter, and our multidisciplinary medical teams are working around the clock to provide you and your loved ones with the care you need, right when you need it.
To better serve the health needs of our communities, we have expanded our medical staff including our newest physicians: Shawn A. Berkowitz, MD, CMD, Family Medicine & Gerontology at the Winchendon Health Center; Marieni Cruz, MD, FACP, specializing in Internal Medicine and Addiction in the Athol region; Jonathan Grogins, MD, FACOG, Obstetrics/Gynecology; Cory Nohl, MD, Psychiatry; and Alexandra A. Schultes, MD, Family Medicine at Ashburnham Family Medicine.
A Holiday Wish for Our Communities
In closing, I would like to take a moment to remember the safety and care provided by our local police, firefighters, Board of Health staff members, EMS workers, emergency personnel, and the physicians, staff and volunteers of Heywood Healthcare. Their dedication to the health and welfare of our communities is a daily blessing for our residents.
A special thanks to the selfless members and veterans of our Armed Forces who offer an immeasurable gift of bravery and personal sacrifice, for which we are immensely grateful.
To you and your family, I extend our sincerest wishes for a joyous holiday season, from all of us at Heywood Healthcare – Athol Hospital, Heywood Hospital, Winchendon Health Center, Heywood Rehabilitation Center, the Quabbin Retreat and Heywood Medical Group.
If you have any questions or concerns, please email me at President@heywood.org.
I wish you all a happy, healthy and peaceful holiday season.
